Pair of Cast Iron Horse Leg Form Building Fenders Attributed to William Adams

Description

A fine pair of unusual form cast iron horse leg building fenders or carriage guides attributed to William Adams, a Philadelphia iron worker (b.1833). Adams, who after being in partnership under the name Williams & Storrie Iron Foundry in the late 19th century, became incorporated in 1903 under his own name. A similar pair has been found with a Wm. Adams Co mark. Building fenders or carriage guides were used to steer away carriages from the corners of buildings. This pair in the form of horse foreleg or hooves has angled lattice work behind them and was found in Philadelphia, and probably pre-dates Adams’ incorporation of his individual business, circa 1870-1890. Very good overall condition, unsigned, with nice oxidation, and minor imperfections, minor rust and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: Each measure 24.5 in H x 6 in W x 9.5 in D.
