Description
RARE gothic Hartford CT state capital cast iron roof crestingA very rare piece of history - cast iron roof cresting removed from the Connecticut state capitol in the late 1970's early 1980's during a major renovation of the 1879 gothic victorian grandeur constructed in Bushnell Park (formerly Trinity college property)
Prior to the construction of this building - Connecticut had two state capitols: one in New Haven, one in Hartford - after centuries of the state government alternating it's location yearly - a legislative act was passed locating the seat of state government in Hartford (of course the citizens of Hartford sweetened the pot with a 0,000 gift towards the construction of a new capitol!)
A site was chosen and paid for by the state - 6 years of construstion overruns, and finally in 1879 a brand new .2 million dollar building was opened - the building was one of the top ten architectural wonders of it's period. A century of wear and tear caught up with the building in the 1970's and luckily the leaders of the time thought better than to tear it down - instead they spent close to million to refurbish the building.
This cresting - original to the building was made by Taylor & Fenn in East Windsor, CT - and recast in the early 1980's (by the same company!) for the replacement iron was put back on the roof! (provenance can be provided in a book commissioned by the Old State House association!)
This listing gives an option on TWO different styles of cresting - one a little larger than the other!
The larger panel measures 32" wide by 16" high and is 1.25" thick
The smaller panel measures 26" wide - is 13.5" high and is 1.75" thick.
These make SPECTACULAR wall art - you will not find a better piece of local history! These pieces are very RARE -
YOUR bid is for
