Description
This is a circa 1880s, LIFE SIZED "lawn fountain" made entirely of zinc. This amazing piece belongs on an estate of the finest caliber. Produced by the J. L. Mott Foundry in NY, our extensive research has found only 1 existing example in Shelbyville, KY. (See photos). Also shown are an ad from a turn of the century magazine featuring this very fountain, a page from an original J. L. Mott Foundry catalog showing this exact model named "Atlantic", and a picture depicting 4 of this same model adorning a gigantic fountain in early 1900s New Jersey, touted as being the largest and most elaborate fountain in America at that time.FYI: The awesome 3-tier base for the one we've shown - which is standing in Shelbyville, Kentucky's courthouse square - was produced by, as I remember, by a foundry firm in Florida. We spoke with them a few years ago about having the exact same set of trays produced for our identical fountain figure and they quoted us ,000 to do the whole thing. They said they'd kept the molds, which only makes sense.
Its dimensions are: 68" tall, 60" across the widest way, and 45" across the narrowest way, and the weight, we believe, is around 700 lbs. The original iron plumbing has been replaced with plastic and the new fountain nozzle provides 4 distinct spray patterns. It has been accurately restored including, as per original, its genuine BRONZE-based paint. Despite its great weight, just to be sure, it now has a 3/4" steel plate on its bottom with 4 steel cleats at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock that will serve to anchor it safely to its base.
As one of the images clearly shows, these Victorian fountain statues were designed to be displayed in either gardens, in the center of (coy) fish ponds, or at the pinnacle of a multiple-tiered stack of fountain trays. Even the Smithsonian had not been able to come up with an actual photograph of this exceptionally rare fountain. They've got one now!
