The clay along the Hudson River north of NY CITY was exceptional for making brick. The receding glaciers from the Ice Age left behind rich deposits of clay near Croton on the Hudson. Millions of clay bricks were needed to meet the need of the exploding industrial revolution in the northeastern United States. The Washburn Brothers Co. was one of the numerous brickyards that opened in the later half of the 19th century. Note the WBCo maker’s mark is in the indentation or frog
This brick was found in NY City in the demolition debris of an old house in Manhattan.
